Psion II LZ64 (P464 with OS patch)?

Post by toml12953 »

I see an eBay ad for a Psion II LZ64 (P464 with OS patch). What is this OS patch they talk about? What does it patch?

Psion II LZ64 (P464 with OS patch)?

Post by MartinReid »

Dear TomL

POS2LZ64 is a utility written by Terry Kitchener that convers a 'Point Of Sales' Organiser (POS464) into a standard LZ64.. See photo 1 on the eBay listing... It works perfectly... Gary Hawes (Hawsay) has one or two that he is using successfully...

I've attached the readme.txt file that Terry includes with the 'patch' for your reference..

Also the eBay chap selling it is a member of this forum and if you check his 'feedback' he has close to 500 positive and no negatives. He gets my recommendation... And knowing him; when it arrives it will have 'extras' included. There is another LZ on eBay for less money but that is only an LZ32... And you know the score with IT equipment... Always get the maximum memory you can...

Sincerely and in good faith
Martin

If you are feelng adventurous you can swap the ROM for an LZ64 ROM, if you can find the ROM and don't mind a bit of soldering and programming.

I don’t see the point?....?
If it functions exactly like an LZ64, why get the soldering iron out (with a chance of doing some damage)?
Plus, it is what it is, labelled P464, not LZ64.....?
Why?

It does make the change permanent. If you leave the units with no battery for any length of time then the patch has to be re-applied. It is quite a bit of work with the hot air gun, I suppose. You could put permanent custom code on there while you were t it, but that is a lot of extra work.
