Speech Synthesiser Rovoreed

Post by olivierg »

Hello All,

Yesterday I received the Speech Synthesiser Rovoreed (Many Thanks Peter).
Here is the preliminary diagram.
Speech Synthetiser preliminary.jpg
It is perfectly reproducible at a reasonable price.
I would only do 1 PCB, but bigger, as the printing of the box is mandatory, there is no longer any size limitation.

There are choices to be made:
1a) External power supply yes / no?
1b) If so, microUSB as in the CL?
2) Changed amplifier IC (there are better now and designed for 5V).
3) Change speaker (the original is a 32 Ohm headphone).
......

Next step, second check, before new schematic desgn.

Edit 26/02/21:
Second check, finish (the preliminary is good).
New schematic finish, all in trough hole components, easy to assemble and repair.

Change the IC Amplifer
Add DC-DC 5V to 10V (microUSB)
Order all components for test.
Start the PCB Design.
Edit 27/02/21:
First version of PCB design, now i wait parts for checking.

Edit 03/03/21:
I received yesterday 10 ICs (SP0256-AL2) from china (via eBay) and did a test with an arduino https://www.instructables.com/Arduino-V ... eech-Chip/, it not work, if I put the original IC it works. So I received copies (it seemed a bit too new to me).
I launch a request for a price offer via Chinese companies whose job it is, it guarantees that they are originals (I have already done this works well), it is just more expensive.
Edit 12/03/21:
Schematic & PCB V2.0: change the amplifier chip to class D, but exist only in SMD.

Received offer from china of speech chip, from 3$ (probably fake) to 10$, but i waiting more test.
Edit 16/05/21:
PCB assembled, test now.

Thanks
Olivier
PS: For clarity and follow-up I edit this post

Olivier I think my answers to 1b, 2 and 3 would be yes.
I query the use of “mandatory” for the case, it would depend on the demand, but as I think it could be quite high, you are probably right. There are a number of similar cases kicking around from obsolete or redundant topslot accessories.
I don’t know what others might think, but any improvement is an advancement. If there are any collectors looking for “the original”, there were a number made, but I really think it is something that needs rolling out....
a) as an experimental teaching or research aid (as well as having some immediate applications), and
b) an affordable piece of technology, which might produce some worthwhile advances by input from those who just want to “dabble” with it.
c) I haven’t really thought about other languages, but since it is allophonic there is a lot of potential!
I knew you had the capability, but didn’t expect such a rapid response!
Another feather in your cap!
Peter

Rovoreed Speech Synthesiser Manual and PodCast

Post by MartinReid »

Jaap has a copy of the manual (here)

I borrowed a Rovoreed Speech Synthesiser from Dave Carrick, so I suggest he may be a contact for a hard copy.

For those interested the attached ZIP contains a copy of a 'PodCast' it produced and a printed copy of its vocabulary database.

In good faith
Martin
