Comms link setup - Com Port Numbers

Post by MartinReid »

Dear All Members..

In the midst of a project I have a question relating to USB COMs Ports. Could members please respond with details of their Comms Link Connections?

Details relating to - System - Lead type - Comms Ports etc..

(1) Computer Setup - Windows Version (7,8,10) (32/64bit)
(2) Serial Lead
- (a) Original Serial Comms Link
- (b) Original Comms Link with Serial to USB connector
- (c) Oliviers USB Comms Link
- (d) Other (please outline)
(3) COMs PORT connection
- (a) Normal connection COM?
- (b) Maximum Number of Available Ports (COM?)

For me it would be
(1) Desktop PC Windows 7 (32 Bit)
(2) (a)
(3) (a) = Normal COM1
(3) (b) = Maximum COM7
and
(1) Laptop/Tablet Windows 8.1 (32 Bit)
(2) (c)
(3) (a) = Normal COM4
(3) (b) = Maximum COM4

Any examples will be much appreciated.
Sincerely and in good faith
Martin

PS What Baud Rate Setting are you using?

I use a laptop with 3 usb ports.
It is up to you what "name" you will give to each port.
I have named the first usb connector "com1" , the second "com2" and the third "com3".
I have done this using the Windows 10 device manager.
I use to have a connection between Psion II and laptop with the following comm setup : 9600,e,7,1.
But you can also have connection with the Psion II default setup , 9600,n,8,1.

To what port is Psi2Win or ORG-Link connected? Do you ever use a port number above COM8?

The only time I have used a comm port above 8 it was when I was trying to have connection between the Psion II and the laptop via bluetooth.
